But when is it the right time to replace your windows? Here are 6 questions you need to consider when deciding if you need new windows.
Can you open and close your windows?
There are many reasons that a window might be practically impossible to open. We often see windows that are painted shut or where the locks are seized or broken, or a frame that has warped over time.
Windows provide a potentially life-saving escape route if you need to vacate your home in the event of an emergency. If you are unable to open your windows for any reason, then it’s certainly time to install new ones.
Are your energy bills increasing?
Older windows will become increasingly inefficient over time and this can have a significant impact on your home’s insulation, leading to higher energy bills. If your gas or electricity costs are rising, it could be that heat is escaping through your windows and your central heating is working harder to compensate.
Tip tip: Check if heat is escaping from your windows by standing close to them, if it feels cooler there than in the rest of the room, it could be time to consider replacing them.
Is there moisture between the panes of glass?
Your view can be ruined if moisture gets trapped between the panes of a double-glazed window. Not only does it look unsightly, but it can also block natural light from flooding the room.
On single-pane windows, condensation can form on the inside, which drips down onto the walls and causes damp. We’ve replaced many older style windows which had mould growing on the frame due to a build-up of condensation.
Condensation usually happens when the seals have eroded, and the most cost-effective solution is to install new uPVC windows as repairs are expensive and often fail again a couple of years down the line.
Are the panes cracked or chipped?
Cracks in your windowpanes should never be ignored, as they can spread and cause a safety issue.
Damaged panes will not provide adequate security for your home and they will be much less energy-efficient too.
